Prog Rock/Concept Album Review: Kompendium-Beneath The Waves

See on Scoop.it - Music Reviews
image

Kompendium is the name of the “band” behind the concept album Beneath The Waves. This is the brainchild of Rob Reed, from the Welsh progressive rock band, Magenta, and it has taken 3 years to come to fruition. There are remarkable musicians involved in this project, such as Steve Balsamo (vocals), Steve Hackett (guitar), Gavin Harrison (drums), Nick Beggs (chapman stick), Troy Donockley (Uileann pipes and whistles), Nick Barrett (guitar) and more, including a contribution by the opera singers, Rhys Merion and Shan Cothi, with superb input by the English Chamber Choir and the London Session Orchestra.

Prog Rock Review: Focus-X

See on Scoop.it - Music Reviews
image

Focus are a Dutch progressive rock band founded away back in the depths of time, well 1969 to be precise, by Thijs Van Leer, a classically trained organist and flautist and Jan Akkerman, guitar virtuoso. (Well at least I think he is). They first released an album, In And Out Of Focus in 1970 and then they had a few hit singles, notably “Hocus Pocus” and “Sylvia.”

Recently a very unusual CD landed on my desk for review. This is a band that I can say with certainty that I have never heard of before, and the name of the band, Clay Green’s Polysorbate Masquerade Band. The CD comes in two versions, Chronicles of Bubbledroid and the Collector’s Edition of the same CD which has additional tracks.

Prog Rock Review: Nine Stones Close-One Eye On The Sunrise

See on Scoop.it - Music Reviews
image

Nine Stones Close was conceived in 2008 as a solo project by Adrian Jones. He independently released the first album, St Lo, to critical acclaim and this led to a follow up, released in 2010, Traces. This was an album made with a “proper” band comprising, Adrian Jones (guitars), Brendan Eyre (keyboards), Marc Atkinson (vocals) and Neil Quarrell (drums). This new release. One Eye On The Sunrise, from the band shows further changes to the members of the group. Former members Brendan and Marc rejoin Adrian, and they are joined by Peter Vink (bass) and Pieter Van Hoorn (drums).

Progressive Rock Review: Stealing Axion-Moments

See on Scoop.it - Music Reviews
image
The band Stealing Axion offers up a curious musical fusion. On the one hand, with its sometimes rough lead vocals, it sounds like a modern heavy metal band. However, musically, this group’s instrumental approach is far more in line with a progressive rock band. In some cases, the vocals alternate between hard rock singing, and smooth, progressive vocalizing.
